If you haven’t watched the video for Purple Lamborghini by Rick Ross and Skrillex off the Suicide Squad soundtrack, you should. It features Jared Leto in character as the Joker. It has to be seen to be believed. Check it out:
You know the feeling you get when you take too much NyQuil, but you wake up in the middle of the night anyway before it’s worn off? That’s how it felt to watch this. Like I’d wake up in the middle of the night, woozy in a cold sweat, thinking, “Whoa! Thank God that was just a dream and not real! Hope I can stop taking this NyQuil soon, the other night I dreamed Lex Luthor, Drake and some other DJ walked around a titty bar then got on a boat.”
(I said some other DJ because I’ll be honest, I don’t know that many DJs. I actually had to Google who Skrillex was for the purposes of writing this blog. Based on the name alone, I would’ve guessed he was a type of prehistoric shellfish.)
The weirdest part of the video is how the Joker doesn’t even do anything. It’s just him walking around and looking at the camera with Skrillex in tow. He’s not doing any Joker shit. It’s like this is the best they could negotiate. “Leto says he’ll do it as long as he can just walk around. He said he may do a weird smile but that’s the absolute limit. He’ll wear a suit but it can’t be purple. He was pretty strict on ‘no Joker stuff.’ In fact when we showed him the script with all the cool Joker stuff we had planned he said no and did the Joker laugh. He was quick to add he also wouldn’t do the laugh in the video.”
Leto is a fine actor and you get the feeling the Joker being so underwhelming isn’t his fault, but this was a huge letdown. Not only was Heath Ledger’s version light years’ better than this, you’d never see him popping up in a music video with an asthmatic rapper and a DJ who looks like Corey Feldman. And for anyone trying to make the case that there’s no way you can get the Joker to do something cool with music playing in the background, I give you exhibit A:
Ledger has the definitive take on the Joker and Nicholson has the definitive take on how a music video with Joker could and should look. Meanwhile Leto’s Joker looks like a guy with an impressive Halloween costume.
